As we mark the National Day of Mourning for Workers killed or injured on the job, two more cases make the News. A 24 year-old man was killed in an industrial accident and his co-worker seriously injured near Windsor, Ontario. Initial indications point at a possible equipment malfunction. The Ministry of Labour is investigating.
In a second incident, a homeowner was trapped for several hours after the trench she was working in collapsed. She was eventually rescued and transported to hospital. OPP is investigating and said improper digging and saturated soil from recent rainfall were factors.
Both incidents stress the importance of pre-inspection on equipment and the work-areas "prior" to conducting any work. Supervisors are required, by law, to ensure pre-inspections are carried out. The importance was pre-inspections cannot be stressed enough.
